An effective conference should inspire attendees to leave better equipped to face the challenges of the next day. Whether they are inspired or informed, if a delegate cannot takeaway at least a few kernels, it’s hard to argue that it was worth it for them. It is up to the speakers at the conference to deliver that value.
Sometimes clients say there is no budget for a paid keynote speaker.
Is there a budget for a mid-day coffee for all 400 delegates? Is there a budget for a piece of tiramisu after dinner?
While there are many hotels and conference centres that brew delicious coffee and bake great tiramisu, nobody is going to be telling all their friends or tweeting incessantly about how great they were.
What they will preach is how much they enjoyed the keynote, how informative and/or inspirational he or she was.
Scrap the second or third coffee and the dessert, invest that budget into someone who can transform your conference.
